How to keep your lips healthy and hydrated

Cómo mantener tus labios sanos e hidratados

Cold or heat, wind, drinking too little water, or a poor diet can cause your lips to look chapped, dry, and even open small wounds. The lips are one of the first things you see, and one of the ones we use the most (eating, drinking, talking, kissing, etc.), and you should treat them just like any other part of your body. That's why we're giving you some tips. so that they are healthy and hydrated.

1. Drink plenty of water

It's obvious, but very few people drink the two liters of water a day needed to keep their bodies well hydrated. So, the number one rule for healthy lips is to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

2. Exfoliate from time to time

Some people might disagree with this because the skin on your lips is extremely delicate, and a poorly done peel can be very irritating. But exfoliating when your lips are dry will remove the accumulated dead cells and allow the skin to fully recover. Besides, don't you hate it when you put on lipstick and that raised layer of skin is left behind ? Just like the rest of your body, your skin should be free of dead skin so that your lips can properly absorb moisturizing balms or lip balms. Don't forget to moisturize after exfoliating. You can do this once a week with simple homemade recipes. For example, mix a tablespoon of sugar with a tablespoon of honey or petroleum jelly, and gently apply it with a toothbrush (or your fingers) in circular motions. Rinse with warm water and apply your moisturizing balm, and that's it!

3. Avoid very salty foods

Very salty foods, like chips or salted nuts, are quite bad for the health of your lips. This is because the salt sticks to the skin and absorbs the little water stored when they're dry. If you can't avoid eating them, just rinse your mouth well afterward.

4. Protect them from the weather

In winter, we must keep in mind that wind, cold, and snow can greatly affect even the most sensitive skin. What can you do? Cover yourself as much as possible with a scarf and always carry a moisturizing balm to protect your lips. In summer, the situation is the opposite. The sun is the ultimate enemy, because lips don't tan, but burn. It's best to use special lipsticks containing sun protection and avoid the sun's peak hours (or wear hats and visors).

5. Don't lick or bite yourself

That gesture, which is so popularly considered sexy, like biting or licking your lip, can be very damaging. If you lick your lips constantly, especially when they feel dry, you'll only dry them out further with saliva and remove the natural layer of balm. Biting your lips isn't good either, because the slight pressure you apply with your teeth will damage the delicate skin. And please don't pick at them when they become flaky, as this will slow down the healing process.

6. Moisten with oils

If you don't want to use store-bought lipsticks, that's fine. You can use natural oils, which also offer great benefits. For example, olive or almond oil are highly recommended. Apply a few drops and let it absorb. It will take longer to absorb than traditional balms, so it's best to do this when you're at home, and even better if you do it more than once a day. The oils will create a protective layer against the sun and weather while moisturizing and adding shine.
