5 makeup trends that stand out in 2021

5 tendencias de maquillaje que destacan en 2021

Makeup artist Sir John has broken down some of the biggest trends for the new year. For example, he wants you to try tightlining and ditch contouring. Below, Sir John's ultimate guide to the biggest makeup trends of 2021. Happy creating!

1. Less is more

If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that skincare should be priority number one, and doing a face mask at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday is totally acceptable. "I think in terms of makeup trends, what's going to be huge is more embracing skin," explains SJ. "People have learned to embrace their skin, to love it, and to not have to do it from forehead to chin." If there's one thing we can't deny, it's that 2020 is probably the year we'll have worn the least amount of makeup (except for the most serious beauty freaks).

2. The eyes are the key (and always have been)

Masks don't seem to be going away anytime soon, so it's the perfect time to invest in your eyes. "I think eyes will be big," says SJ. "People will still love eyelashes and eyebrows, and they will always be something to highlight. They were 2,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, and they will still be in 2088," says the makeup artist.

3. Long live the red lip

Sir John predicts that lips will take center stage again throughout the year. "This year has been a great test of how effective our long-lasting lipsticks are," explains SJ. "The goal now is to find out how long the lipstick will stay on your lips without drying them out," adding, "If you're wearing a super matte lipstick and don't want the texture of your lips to change, use an eye cream over your lip balm." If that's also a concern, Matte Liquid Lipstick is the one for you!

4. You should try tightlining in 2021

" Tightlining is when you slightly lift your lash line and line that area with a black waterproof pencil, right underneath your lashes," explains SJ. "What that does is it gives all your lashes density, blackness, and thickness from the root, and it's really almost like an optical illusion." The best part about this beauty trick is that no one will even know they're seeing eyeliner, but it gives you a dazzling eyeliner. Sounds good...

5. Discover sculpting 2.0

Sir John says aggressive forms of contouring are out. What's next? "I think sculpting is where we're going," he adds. "Invisible sculpting, softer looks when it comes to the structure of our faces, and all these harder, more accentuated lines need to stay in 2020." Harsh lines were so 2020.
